Quintessential Pioneers of American Industrial Design,By Stacy Miles Designer 2014Consumer interest in modern design
continued to increase after World War II, when machines allowed corporations to mass produce vacuums, hair dryers, toasters and other consumer goods at low cost. Industrial designers helped lower costs further by exploiting inexpensive new materials like plastic, vinyl, chrome, aluminum and plywood, which responded well to advances in manufacturing such as the use of molds and stamping. Affordable prices and growing prosperity nationwide helped drive popular demand.
Even as streamlining gave way to new looks in the 1960s, the groundbreaking work of industrial designers continued to transform the look of homes and offices across the country. Today, industrial design remains an integral component of American manufacturing and business, as well as daily life.

PIONEERS OF AMERICAN INDUSTRIAL DESIGN: 1880-1989 Encompassing everything from consumer goods-such as furniture, kitchen appliances, vacuums, cars, and even airplanes, industrial design is the study and creation of products whose function and construction have been optimized for human use. The work of these inspirational designers of the 20th century the “Pioneers of American Industrial Design”, have transformed homes, offices and helped to shape the look of everyday life in the 20th century. Their design inspiration has led the way to the age of technology in design for the 21st century.
Pioneers of American Industrial Design
Designer Stacy Miles — reaching for the very roots of the question “Why design?” My inspirations come from everyday life, and the pioneers in design that came before me. It takes a lot of work to figure out how to make a design look good. So I work hard every day!
By honoring 12 of the nation’s most important and influential industrial designers, The Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum was the setting for the dedication. The 12 designers who are honored on individual stamps include Peter Müller-Munk, Frederick Hurten Rhead, Raymond Loewy, Donald Deskey, Walter Dorwin Teague, Henry Dreyfuss, Norman Bel Geddes, Dave Chapman, Greta von Nessen, Eliot Noyes, Russel Wright and Gilbert Rohde. Joining Granholm to dedicate the stamps were Bill Moggridge, director, Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum; Ralph Caplan, design writer; Jessica Helfand and Sylvia Harris, Citizens’ Stamp Advisory Committee; Derry Noyes, art director; Margaret Bauer, art designer; and Stephen M. Kearney, executive director, Stamp Services.
Industrial design emerged as a profession in the United Sates in the 1920s, but really took off during the Great Depression. Faced with decreasing sales, manufacturers turned to industrial designers to give their products a modern look that would appeal to consumers. Characterized by horizontal lines and rounded shapes, the new, streamlined looks differed completely from the decorative extravagance of the 1920s. The designs evoked a sense of speed and efficiency and projected the image of progress and affluence the public desired.

Quintessential Design Case Study 2014,by Stacy Miles Designer.
As the Designer ” I truly believe that any home renovation /remodel can be a success on a limited budget”.
By using my creative resourcefulness combined with my extensive formal design education , that includes all of my project experience inevitably lead to clever solutions and beautiful results.
When working with limited budget of roughly $80/per square foot and a compressed construction period of 120 days from the start of demolition to finish, as the designer and member of the remodel team of an architect, contractor, and electrician, I become the Design Director of the project. As I procure all the materials (everything except for the sheet rock). “Ordering everything myself saves money, as normally a contractor would add a fee on top of the cost for the materials, which includes being responsible for getting the right overage on the tiles and making sure everything arrived in the right sequence. “This usually is quite stressful, and I wouldn´t necessarily recommend trying this at home, DIY.”
As a designer, however, I do offer a client several user-friendly tips for staying on budget and on time. “Having done extensive research on all of my past projects, I am able to make final decisions on schedule, which is one of the most important aspects of any successful project. I always recommend that clients do their research by compiling and organizing their images or links to ideas, materials, and products in a thoughtful way; this is invaluable to you as well as working with a design team “Working within one’s budget is always challenging. As a designer, I am well aware of what´s available in terms of materials and fixtures and covet the same things I specify for my clients. The results are to always strike a balance between the high and low. In most projects in terms of colors I shoot for a fairly neutral palette with varied, rich textures and spots of color.” When it comes to tile, especially for a backsplash, “I splurge on tiles from one or two Italian Tile companies, because of the extraordinary depth of their colors (and non-colors) and handmade character. “The back splash tile in a kitchen or any space is a focal point, I tend not to produce a border tile for it. Since I chose the tile for its form and pattern, I feel that leaving the edge raw celebrates the design aspect .In terms of kitchen design, I always work with the highs and lows, given the open nature of the multi-function room, I tend to avoid upper cabinets and a full height refrigerator for a more integrated overall aesthetic. “For the kitchen splurges, I will go with fridge drawers and custom stainless steel panels to keep the kitchen quiet and monolithic. I may use other materials for the island, to surround and warm it up, quartz, granite and stone are the materials that work best with most tiles. As the designer, I tend to use a neutral palette to create a background that can accommodate a high/low design approach with any kitchen design. The design debate continues whether to use marble or granite for counter tops …onyx instead of limestone…travertine instead of porcelain.
The big picture , designing with tiles and how to achieve continuity, select colors, choose the pattern and shapes of the tiles and adding texture. Knowing the character of the space and adding little details with special effects like bull noses to v-caps and the aesthetics of grout. Always be aware for special considerations; wet areas, showers and inside and in-between outside like an entry foyer. How it all comes together very important that when shopping get lead times, samples, variation in the product and pricing. Tile is low maintence , durable and easy to clean. I have some great ways to introduce tile as a piece of artistry or featured focal wall in any space. Tiles on a wall in a dining room enhancing the space by installing a wall of glass mosaics in a pattern with an iridescent, reflective finish that will catch the light. By adding tile to the room, it will bring color, pattern and texture where it is lacking and complete the style and enhance the attributes that already exposit. Tiles can mimic the look of wallpaper or an exquisite fabric. I like to use tile in a subtle pattern , quiet shades of grey and bring in sophistication and a dose of the unexpected- to any modern room. Tile- The way we live with color, and styles are endless combinations ; Industrial glamour, edgy classic , mid-century elegant, how to mix and match, where to start when designing a counter top ,back splash and floors .
The design debate for the best kitchen and bathroom designs will be ultimately judged by the client! Looking forward to showing you my new projects! Design Liberation …

2.Fake the architecture with wall paper or installations..Bring depth and dimension into a room by using richly textured paper or some interesting 3D tiles cut into a brick pattern template. each section is raised and different and creates a visual rich texture.
3. Asymmetrical floor plans, balance everywhere, establish harmony with overall arrangement of pairs of lamps, pillows and chairs align with a sofa. Also try to work with the boxy, low-to-the-ground pieces-large sofas, sturdy club chairs, angular coffee tables, serve as the rooms foundation. Try a splash of a bright hue, every room needs a little color!
While designing opulent soup to -nuts remodel projects, even the fanciest designs can use some inexpensive fixes..
1.Revamp what you have. Paint or upholstery and existing chair , if it is still hideous than give it away! At least you tried? Paint some of you interior doors, chose a bright contrast color other than a white door. Forego pricey overhead lighting fixtures. A basic swing-arm sconce, task lights and table lamps cost mush less than recessed lighting and they throw a soft light that creates a nice ambiance. A little decadence goes along way…Costyle fabrics in a small dose, like a pillow in silk velvet rather than an entire sofa covered in the same fabric.
Quintessential Recession-proof decorating tips..by Stacy Miles,Designer.
3. Kitchen ideas..in a tiny kitchen go for graphic prints, a punchy design can overwhelm a larger kitchen , but in small doses it works.Try high gloss lacquered paint on cabinets, add reflective surfaces, that make the kitchen pop. Feature a focus backsplash in glass tiles or beautiful marble. I like to use tile in a subtle pattern , quiet shades of grey and bring in sophistication and a dose of the unexpected- to any modern room. Subject: an Intriguing combination…
The purity of design and quality of finish are paramount, when designing with tiles. The client will also get an intriguing combination of styles – perhaps a Fifties lamp juxtaposed with an eighteenth-century chair. Working with clients who are art collectors allows me to create interior spaces where architecture and finishing complement the client’s collection and allow art and design to work seamlessly with one another. With a wide range of clients , some of my recent projects include an apartment in the west village of Manhattan and an English Tudor remodel house on Long Island, a duplex apartment in Great Neck , New York.
